ARBOL - Protecting the EARTH one SEED at a Time! What are community gardens?

Community gardens provide opportunities to grow food, to share traditions between cultures and generations, to create habitable environments, and most importantly to build community. The multiple benefits of community gardens extend far beyond a garden's borders! A community garden is any space where plants are grown and maintained by a community to meet the needs of that community. According to recent statistics, in seven of the past eight years the world has actually grown less food than it has consumed, leaving us in "the post-food-surplus era". This is why it is vital to create community gardens that can provide access to fresh produce and plants as well as access to satisfying labor, neighborhood improvement, sense of community and connection to the environment. Since the creation of community gardens takes a substantial amount of work, we are starting by training people in organic gardening so they can learn to grow their own food and be connected to others who want to grow their food without pesticides or genetically altered materials. The goal is to have large parcels of land that are accesible to the people who work on them.
